"419" Scam – Advance Fee / Fake Lottery Scam

The so-called "419" scam is a type of fraud dominated by criminals from Nigeria and other countries in Africa. Victims of the scam are promised a large amount of money, such as a lottery prize, inheritance, money sitting in some bank account, etc.

Victims never receive this non-existent fortune but are tricked into sending their money to the criminals, who remain anonymous. They hide their real identity and location by using fake names and fake postal addresses as well as communicating via anonymous free email accounts and mobile phones.

Keep in mind that scammers DO NOT use their real names when defrauding people.
The criminals either abuse names of real people or companies or invent names or addresses.
Any real people or companies mentioned below have NO CONNECTION to the scammers!

Read more about such scams here or in our 419 FAQ. Use the Scam-O-Matic to verify suspect emails.

Subject: Research Grant Payment

Mr. Michael Sisulu
Chief Accounts Officer,
University of Witwatersrand,
Johannesburg,
South Africa.

I am Michael Sisulu, the Head of Accounts Department of
the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.
I write to solicit your assistance in a project of mutual
benefit. We got your contact over the Internet. In February
1999, a research grant of seven million, three Hundred
thousand United States Dollars (US$7.3) was given to the
Pharmacology Department, by the Pharmaceutical Society of
South Africa to conduct a research on the effect of a "local
plant extract" on Sickle Cell Disease in South Africa.

The research has since been concluded-specifically in August
2002. Of the total amount allocated for the research purposes,
only three millions, six hundred and twenty three thouusand
US$3.623Million was spent leaving a balance of threee millions,
six hundred and seventy-seven thousand United States dollars
(US$3.877).

We are contacting you with the hope of presenting you as the
owner of a chemical company that supply some of the chemicals
that was used during our research and as such are indebted
to you of the remaining balance thereby assisting us in
transferring this balance out for our own use. If we do not,
transfer the funds now and a receipt of it documented, it will
be diverted to the federal education account where in most
cases, the top officials will have it documented and use it
for their own purposes. We guarantee that this transaction
will be 100% hitch-free and we will negotiate what your
percentage of the total would be if you accept to assist us.

We (I and my colleagues) have put in over 25 years of our
lives into working for the government and do NOT have anything
to show for it, hence this opportunity we see as a God-Sent
one. We sincerely hope that you will be of assistance to us.
I implore you to treat this mail as confidentially as possible
as we are still active workers with the government of South
Africa (Finance Ministry), though retiring in the first
quarter of next year.

I am currently on leave and will be in the United Kingdom for
a month to enable me carry-out this transaction successfully.

If you are in a position to assist, then get back to me with
your full names and address, telephone and fax numbers to
enable me give you more details that we have put in place to
actualize our goals; if you cannot help us, do not respond to
this letter and we apologize for taking your time.

Sincerely yours,

Mr. Michael Sisulu.
