"419" Scam – Advance Fee / Fake Lottery Scam

The so-called "419" scam is a type of fraud dominated by criminals from Nigeria and other countries in Africa. Victims of the scam are promised a large amount of money, such as a lottery prize, inheritance, money sitting in some bank account, etc.

Victims never receive this non-existent fortune but are tricked into sending their money to the criminals, who remain anonymous. They hide their real identity and location by using fake names and fake postal addresses as well as communicating via anonymous free email accounts and mobile phones.

Keep in mind that scammers DO NOT use their real names when defrauding people.
The criminals either abuse names of real people or companies or invent names or addresses.
Any real people or companies mentioned below have NO CONNECTION to the scammers!

Some comments by the Scam-O-Matic about the following email:

An email address listed inside this email has been used in a known fraud before.
This email uses a separate reply address that is different from the sender address. Spammers use this to get replies even when the original spam sending accounts have been shut down. Also, sometimes the sender addresses are legitimate looking but fake and only the reply address is actually an email account controlled by the scammers.
The following phrases in this message should put you on alert:
- "dear friend" (a common phrase found in 419 scams)
- ",500,000" (they want you to be blinded by the prospect of quick money, but the only money that ever changes hands in 419 scams is from you to the criminals)
- "on my direct telephone line" (a common phrase found in 419 scams)
- "abidjan" (a location commonly mentioned in 419 scams)

This email lists free webmail addresses. Use of such addresses is typical for scams. Lotteries, banks and any but the smallest of companies do not normally use such addresses. Criminals use them to anonymously send and receive email at Internet cafes.

those mails you see on the internet, As he was retired since few years
now before his dead. According to him before he died on May 2nd 2008.He
told me be that his service is not adequately rewarded for that reason
he has some deal he made during his regime that use my name use as the
next of kin.

I presume this mail will not be a surprise to you. My Late Father Dr.
Nkirisi was an accountant in the mineral commission department of
Ministry of Mines and Energy Ghana and also a member of

Contracts awarding committee of this ministry under Ghana government. I
got your full information from Chamber of Commerce and industry on
foreign business relations here in Accra-Ghana. And i believed you must
be trustworthy and honest main looking at your profile.

Some years ago during his reign when he was alive, Ghana government
asked this committee to awards contracts to foreign firms, which him
happed to be the head of this committee. With his good position, this
contract was over invoiced to the tune of US$10,500,000:00 as a deal to
be benefited by the two Members of this committee. Now the contractâ€™s
value has been paid off to the actual contractors that executed these
jobs this was what he explain to me when he was very sick at point of
dead, all i want now is a trusted foreign partner like you because as
am sending this mail to you he has finally sourceded moving this money
out from the country now it is the nearest country Ivory Coast in one
of the best city Abidjan in Africa. This fund is deposited in one of
the Security Firm. Am assuring you that if you can fly down to Abidjan
better so that we meet together and we go together where the fund was
lodge.

The said funs will be shared within us when it is confirmed into your
provided Account in your country by the paying Bank but right now it's

the internet but certainly, this is not one. Please do not fail to
understand that in spite of all that, opportunities of this kind still
