"419" Scam – Advance Fee / Fake Lottery Scam

The so-called "419" scam is a type of fraud dominated by criminals from Nigeria and other countries in Africa. Victims of the scam are promised a large amount of money, such as a lottery prize, inheritance, money sitting in some bank account, etc.

Victims never receive this non-existent fortune but are tricked into sending their money to the criminals, who remain anonymous. They hide their real identity and location by using fake names and fake postal addresses as well as communicating via anonymous free email accounts and mobile phones.

Keep in mind that scammers DO NOT use their real names when defrauding people.
The criminals either abuse names of real people or companies or invent names or addresses.
Any real people or companies mentioned below have NO CONNECTION to the scammers!

Some comments by the Scam-O-Matic about the following email:

An email address listed inside this email has been used in a known fraud before.
This email uses a separate reply address that is different from the sender address. Spammers use this to get replies even when the original spam sending accounts have been shut down. Also, sometimes the sender addresses are legitimate looking but fake and only the reply address is actually an email account controlled by the scammers.
The following phrases in this message should put you on alert:
- "death certificate" (this phrase is often used in inheritance scams such as next of kin or https://www.419scam.org/419-murdered-businessman.htm">orphan scams. )
- "you are advise to" (this email uses bad English)

This email lists mobile phone numbers. Use of such numbers is typical for scams because they allow criminals to conceal their true location. They can receive calls in an Internet cafe from where they send you emails, while pretending to be in some office.

This email lists free webmail addresses. Use of such addresses is typical for scams. Lotteries, banks and any but the smallest of companies do not normally use such addresses. Criminals use them to anonymously send and receive email at Internet cafes.

to contact you due to a report reaching us regarding your* OUTSTANDING FUND
($10.4Million) Ten Million four hundred United States Dollars* only which
has been long over due for payment but was made impossible by some corrupt
officials.

In the course of our General Auditing and Account revision of the first
quarter of 2015,we discovered that the Bank Accounts belonging to some
Benefactors have been changed on the basis that the owners have died some
time last year or have given out an authorization note of change of data.
After the investigations however, it was revealed that there are Foreigners
who are collaborating with Retired Staffs to make these changes illegally
without the knowledge of the Benefactors and one traced to your own change
is this (*Mr Rick Jones*) who said you are dead, hence they have forwarded
some documents/Death certificate so as to divert your fund. The bank
account below was
forwarded/presented by *Mr Rick Jones* as the new account for receipt of
the funds:

In order confirm if actually this is true and hence decided to write to
your email address which after 2 days from now and there is no response, it
will be ascertained that you are truly dead,then proceed with the
telegraphic transfer.If proved otherwise by you to be alive?, please
forward to us all the related Benefactors particulars including your
Telephone numbers,contact address,these details from you will help reach a
conclusion that you still alive.

Anything contrary to this claim will help us charge this man to court and
prosecute him while your fund will be paid to you immediately without any
further delay.
