"419" Scam – Advance Fee / Fake Lottery Scam

The so-called "419" scam is a type of fraud dominated by criminals from Nigeria and other countries in Africa. Victims of the scam are promised a large amount of money, such as a lottery prize, inheritance, money sitting in some bank account, etc.

Victims never receive this non-existent fortune but are tricked into sending their money to the criminals, who remain anonymous. They hide their real identity and location by using fake names and fake postal addresses as well as communicating via anonymous free email accounts and mobile phones.

Keep in mind that scammers DO NOT use their real names when defrauding people.
The criminals either abuse names of real people or companies or invent names or addresses.
Any real people or companies mentioned below have NO CONNECTION to the scammers!

Read more about such scams here or in our 419 FAQ. Use the Scam-O-Matic to verify suspect emails.

Subject: Research Grant

Dr. Micheal Mubanba

Department of Health Information Evaluation and Research,

Civitas Building, cnr Andries and Struben Streets,

Pretoria, South Africa.

I am Micheal Mubanba of Health Information Evaluation and Research in South
Africa. I write to solicit your assistance in a transaction of mutual benefit.
We got your contact at the database of world directory hence, we are contacting
you as we would be glad if you can be of great assistance in this transaction.

In February 2000, a research grant of (US$25Million) was given to my department
and the team of Clinical Pharmacologists by the Pharmaceutical Society of
South Africa to conduct a research on the effect of a local plant extracts
on Sickle Cell Disease in South Africa.

The research was perfectly carried out; a large number of South African
indigenes benefited from it; and it has been concluded since August 2003.
Out of the total amount given to us for the research purposes; and after
the successful completion of the research, we expended US$15Million leaving
a balance of US$10Million. Therefore, we are contacting you with a view
to legally process and transfer the balance of US$10Miliion to you for our
own personal usage. We have put in several years of our lives into working
for the Federal Government of South Africa but, we do NOT have anything
to show for it, hence this opportunity is seen as a God-Sent one.

We sincerely hope that you will be of assistance to us. I therefore implore
you to treat this message with utmost confidentiality as we are still in
active service and we do not anyone to know of our involvement in this transaction.
We repose our confidence in you. Please, bear in mind, your role in this
transaction is risk free and a percentage would be given to you for your
assistance upon the consummation of this transaction.

However, I have recently been transferred to our London office, this is
never a problem as I would make all necessary arrangements for the transfer
of the funds to you in collaboration with my two other colleagues in our
South African office. Upon your response to this message, you would be furnished
with the detailed information as to the progress in this transaction. Should
you want to be of assistance in this transaction, respond to my message.

However, after reading through this message and you feel you cannot be of
assistance for one reason or the other, we sincerely apologize for taking
your time.

Sincerely Yours,

Dr. Micheal Mubanba
