"419" Scam – Advance Fee / Fake Lottery Scam

The so-called "419" scam is a type of fraud dominated by criminals from Nigeria and other countries in Africa. Victims of the scam are promised a large amount of money, such as a lottery prize, inheritance, money sitting in some bank account, etc.

Victims never receive this non-existent fortune but are tricked into sending their money to the criminals, who remain anonymous. They hide their real identity and location by using fake names and fake postal addresses as well as communicating via anonymous free email accounts and mobile phones.

Keep in mind that scammers DO NOT use their real names when defrauding people.
The criminals either abuse names of real people or companies or invent names or addresses.
Any real people or companies mentioned below have NO CONNECTION to the scammers!

Read more about such scams here or in our 419 FAQ. Use the Scam-O-Matic to verify suspect emails.

Subject: BUSINESS PROPOSAL

FROM ROSE SMITH
Johannesburg
15th Febuary 2005

ATTN: SIR/MADAM

Humbly wish to seek your assistance in a matter that is very important and need utmost trust and
Confidence. I am MRS Rose Smith, the wife of Late MR. Robert Smith, who was recently murdered in
the land dispute in Zimbabwe.
I got your contact through network online hence decided to write you. Before the death of my husband,
he had taken me to Johannesburg to deposit the sum of Eighteen million United States Dollars
{US$18,000,000.00} in one of the private finance firm, as he foresaw the looming danger in Zimbabwe.
This money was deposited as family Valuables to avoid much demurrage from firm. This amount was meant
for the purchase of new machines and chemicals for the Farms and establishment of new farm in Swaziland.
This land problem came when Zimbabwean President Mr. Robert Mugabe introduced a new Land Act Reform
wholly affected the rich white farmers and some few black farmers. And this resulted to the killing
and mob action by Zimbabwean war veterans and some lunatics in the society. In fact a lot of people
were killed because of this Land reform Act for which my husband Late Mr. Robert Smith was one of
the victims. It is against this background that I and my family who are currently staying in South Africa
decided to invest the aforementioned sum in viable businesses overseas since the law here in South Africa
prohibits a refugee (asylum seeker) to open any bank account or to be involved in any financial
transactions throughout the territorial zone of South Africa.
I am faced with the state of indecision of investing this amount of money here in South Africa
for fear of going through the same experience in future as both countries have similar political history.
I am sincerely soliciting for your assistance to have the fund transferred to you for onward investment
of the fund. The fund is for the future of my family and We could discussed on your compensation for
establishing my family in your country based on your supervisions. I want to also inform you that 5%
has been mapped out to settle all costs in the course of this transaction. I shall be grateful for
your honesty and having the interest of both families at heart in re-activating life into our livings.
Please, respond sooner to my alternative EMAIL ADDRES jerimaher@netscape.net
Furnishing me with your private phone/fax

Best regards,
Joe Smith
