"419" Scam – Advance Fee / Fake Lottery Scam

The so-called "419" scam is a type of fraud dominated by criminals from Nigeria and other countries in Africa. Victims of the scam are promised a large amount of money, such as a lottery prize, inheritance, money sitting in some bank account, etc.

Victims never receive this non-existent fortune but are tricked into sending their money to the criminals, who remain anonymous. They hide their real identity and location by using fake names and fake postal addresses as well as communicating via anonymous free email accounts and mobile phones.

Keep in mind that scammers DO NOT use their real names when defrauding people.
The criminals either abuse names of real people or companies or invent names or addresses.
Any real people or companies mentioned below have NO CONNECTION to the scammers!

Read more about such scams here or in our 419 FAQ. Use the Scam-O-Matic to verify suspect emails.

Dear Sir/Madam,

This letter was first sent to you via post mail two months ago, but
up till now, I have not heard from you. Based on this, I decided to
reach you through this means. Though, I know for security reasons,
this is not the safest means to reach you, but was left with no other
viable option since there is the pressing need to reach you. I am
quite sure that this mail will surprise you since I have not been
having previous correspondences with you.

My name is Richmond T Johnson (MR), the deputy bank manager of the
above named bank. I have a good business proposition for you, which
I know that, by the special grace of god, will be beneficial to you.

Firstly before I proceed, I have to assure you that this mail is
neither junk, illusion nor mere imagination, but practically achievable
if given your maximum support and cooperation.

In June 1998, Mr. Richard Burson an American civil engineer with the
Nigerian national petroleum corporation nnpc deposited the sum of
$23.8million us dollars with our bank on a three year fixed deposit
basis.

After the three years expired, Mr. Richard Burson was not seen nor
heard from even from any member of his family who is supposed to be the
beneficiary, nothing was heard from him. Since, then the account had
been thrown into our dormant account.

I have sent mails, faxes to his numbers and addresses given still no
response. I was forced to contact the (NNPC) he has been working with,
but was surprised to hear that he was involved in the Egyptian airline that
crashed on October 31st 1999 just a year after he deposited the money
with us. You should visit this website for comfirmation:
http://www.greatdreams.com/passeair990.htm may his soul rest in peace.

Our bank has published on our website for anybody who could give a
useful information to our bank towards reaching any of the relatives to come
up with the information.

The Nigerian law states that, in cases like this, the money should be
returned to the government. I am seriously against returning this old
mans sweat to the govt. account, because one of the officials will steal
this money from the govt account, so I have decided to divert this money to
my own private use if we cannot reach any of his relatives.

I am writing for you to assist me in claiming of this money as the next
of kin. If successfully concluded, you are to take 30% of the total sum
for your assistance, 5% to take care of all the expenses incurred during
this transaction, while the remaining 65% will be for my investment in your
country.

On receipt of your acceptance letter, and a mutual agreement is reached
between us, I will instruct you on how to make this transaction a
success.

If you are interested, please reply through this private email address
richmondtj@latinmail.com. Please note that difference in surname and
nationality will not be a hindrance to the success of this transaction
Anticipating your urgent and favorable response to this business
proposition.

Please I am counting on you.
Best regards,
RICHMOND T.JOHNSON
