"419" Scam – Advance Fee / Fake Lottery Scam

The so-called "419" scam is a type of fraud dominated by criminals from Nigeria and other countries in Africa. Victims of the scam are promised a large amount of money, such as a lottery prize, inheritance, money sitting in some bank account, etc.

Victims never receive this non-existent fortune but are tricked into sending their money to the criminals, who remain anonymous. They hide their real identity and location by using fake names and fake postal addresses as well as communicating via anonymous free email accounts and mobile phones.

Keep in mind that scammers DO NOT use their real names when defrauding people.
The criminals either abuse names of real people or companies or invent names or addresses.
Any real people or companies mentioned below have NO CONNECTION to the scammers!

Read more about such scams here or in our 419 FAQ. Use the Scam-O-Matic to verify suspect emails.

Subject: FIRST OFFER

Good Day,
I have a very good business opportunity here but only looking for a capable
hand that can handle it. I don’t know whether you would be interested.

My name is ANDREW WILLIAMS, a South African expatriate taff of one of the
reputable British Financial institution with office in Cayman Island. We
act as financial advisors and on special arrangements accept Deposits of
Valuables from some of our respected customers, for safekeeping.

Early last year, we received information about the death of one of our
prominent customers from Africa. The customer was the Minister of Natural
Resources in the Government of Sierra Leone during the civil war days. We
have made enquiries to verify the authenticity of the information and it was
later confirmed by the Embassy that the customer has actually died. He was
killed in an ambush laid by officers loyal to the rebel leader of
REVOLUTIONARY UNITED FRONT, RUF, army Corporal Foday Sankoh.

Now, the issue is that the customer before his sudden death has a Fixed
Deposit of FIFTY MILLION (50M) U.S. DOLLARS in our custody which he declared
as a consignment of GOLD & DIAMOND. The Deposit has since matured and due
for clearing and collection but there is no person to claim it because the
man, for obvious reasons, did not provide any next-of-kin. I was the only
person with the accurate information about the Deposit because I acted as
his adviser and proxy and I knew the money actually originated from Diamond
and Gold exports where he was the Minister.

By the company regulation, if more 60 days passes and no person shows up to
claim the Deposit, it will be recovered and if found to be cash, the money
will be given away to the Government or secretly converted by the company
for trading and never to be accounted for again. With my position as his
proxy I can quickly transfer the Deposit without any problem provided I can
find a capable person who will be reliable and trustworthy to receive the
money. I cannot function in this regard because of my status in the company
so I want you to receive the deposit for our mutual benefits. You will also
assist me to invest the money.

Right now, I am willing to share a reasonable percentage of the money to you
as we will agree and give out some to Charities.

Meanwhile, please furnish the following required details so that I can start
the transfer process immediately:

1. YOUR FULL
