Victims never receive this non-existent fortune but are tricked into sending their money to the criminals, who remain anonymous. They hide their real identity and location by using fake names and fake postal addresses as well as communicating via anonymous free email accounts and mobile phones.

• The following phrases in this message should put you on alert:
  • "dear friend" (a common phrase found in 419 scams)
  • "a security company " (this will cost you money - be careful with upfront payments to anyone you only know through email, especially if they promise you a lot of money. Never ever send money by Western Union or MoneyGram to people you do not know personally. )
  • "trunk box" (they want you to be blinded by the prospect of quick money, but the only money that ever changes hands in 419 scams is from you to the criminals)

Dear friend,

I am writing you to know if you can be able to assist in proving an existing bank account number or set up a new one from any bank in your country to receive some funds that was looted in a bank in kenya following the recent crises caused by the just ended presidential election which was unaceptable by the citizen and result to civil unrest. I have sucessfully convey the fund in a trunk box to Ivory Coast where i am at present with my immediate family. I have to ran away with them because the fund in my possession is enough for us in life.

The fund $45.5M have been deposited with a security company for safe keeping, i however did not disclose the content of the box to them but was registerred as family treasure for security reason. I have to do it that way because of the huge amount, i can't take the huge cash to the bank for deposit or opening an account. I need your little help to send me the requested bank account so that i can transfer the fund in your country for investment as my foreign business partner.

Please if you are in position to help me, reply me urgently so as to give you more details.
