"419" Scam – Advance Fee / Fake Lottery Scam

The so-called "419" scam is a type of fraud dominated by criminals from Nigeria and other countries in Africa. Victims of the scam are promised a large amount of money, such as a lottery prize, inheritance, money sitting in some bank account, etc.

Victims never receive this non-existent fortune but are tricked into sending their money to the criminals, who remain anonymous. They hide their real identity and location by using fake names and fake postal addresses as well as communicating via anonymous free email accounts and mobile phones.

Keep in mind that scammers DO NOT use their real names when defrauding people.
The criminals either abuse names of real people or companies or invent names or addresses.
Any real people or companies mentioned below have NO CONNECTION to the scammers!

Some comments by the Scam-O-Matic about the following email:

This email uses a separate reply address that is different from the sender address. Spammers use this to get replies even when the original spam sending accounts have been shut down. Also, sometimes the sender addresses are legitimate looking but fake and only the reply address is actually an email account controlled by the scammers.
The following phrases in this message should put you on alert:
- "clearance certificate" (this will cost you money - be careful with upfront payments to anyone you only know through email, especially if they promise you a lot of money. NEVER send money by Western Union or MoneyGram to people you do not know personally - NO EXCEPTIONS! Instant wire transfer services are not meant to be used with strangers because they offer no protection against fraud. That is precisely why the criminals want you send money that way. )
- "certificate fee" (this will cost you money - be careful with upfront payments to anyone you only know through email, especially if they promise you a lot of money. NEVER send money by Western Union or MoneyGram to people you do not know personally - NO EXCEPTIONS! Instant wire transfer services are not meant to be used with strangers because they offer no protection against fraud. That is precisely why the criminals want you send money that way. )
- "security keeping fee" (this will cost you money - be careful with upfront payments to anyone you only know through email, especially if they promise you a lot of money. - "you are advice to " (this email uses bad English)
- "courier service" (Courier companies mentioned in 419 scams are always fake. They will have you send money to them, but won't deliver anything. )
- "cheque " (Beware of any scheme that involves cashing checks or money orders and then wiring a portion of the funds somewhere - you'll be liable for the entire amount if the checks or money orders turn out to be fake, even after you have received and forwarded cash. If it's a lottery prize, remember that real lotteries do not pay large prizes by check. They wire the money directly to your bank account and you do not pay for that. Many scammers promise a large check only in order to then demand payment of courier fees for a fake courier service. )
- "ccs_courierservice@gala.net" (this email address has been used in a known scam)

This email lists mobile phone numbers. Use of such numbers is typical for scams because they allow criminals to conceal their true location. They can receive calls in an Internet cafe from where they send you emails, while pretending to be in some office.

Greetings!

I just want to inform you that I have deposited your Confirm able Bank Draft of $800.000.00 USD to the CCS COURIER SERVICE here in West africa, due to I have waited enough to hear from you so that your funds will be transferred through CENTRAL BANK OF AFRICA (BOA) here, but because of the late response I now decide to deposit the Bank Draft with CCS COURIER SERVICE with your previous information as you listed it that time, I went and deposit the draft with them because i was travelling out of the country for some Months Course and I will not come back till the end of December and i did not hear from you since then.

Contact the CCS courier dispatch officer with his contact information as listed below for the avoidance of increase of their security safe keeping fee as soon as possible. Contact them to know when they will deliver the package to you because of the expiring date. For your information, I have paid for the delivering Charges, Insurance premium and Clearance Certificate Fee of the Cheque showing that it is not a Drug Money or meant to sponsor Terrorist attack in your Country.

You are advice to contact the courier services immediatey Again, I would have paid for the Security Keeping fee but they refused because they said they don't know when you will contact them and in case of demur rage. You have to contact the CCS SERVICE now for the delivery of your Draft with this information, All you have to do is contact or furnish CCS COURIER SERVICE with your identification for verification of the details there in their office: send them the following details.

Note i include a short note in an envelop and i place it inside the parcel, the note is stating the reason why i am sending you this money and what it is meant for so kindly read the letter when the parcel gets to you. you will get more details in the letter i enclose inside the parcel. Contact them there and know when the Draft will get to your address, Let me repeat again, try to contact them as soon as you receive this mail to avoid any further delay and remember to pay them their Security
Keeping fee of $195.00 US Dollars for their immediate action.

Please make sure the information is complete as they promised that once they receive their security safe keeping fee within 2 to 3 working days the package will arrived your door step according to the shipment officer, Also ask them on how you are to make the payment for the security keeping fee to them so they can effect immediate delivery on your parcel. I left the country today and will not be back till December, but you can email me to let me know that you have receive the draft,
