"419" Scam – Advance Fee / Fake Lottery Scam

The so-called "419" scam is a type of fraud dominated by criminals from Nigeria and other countries in Africa. Victims of the scam are promised a large amount of money, such as a lottery prize, inheritance, money sitting in some bank account, etc.

Victims never receive this non-existent fortune but are tricked into sending their money to the criminals, who remain anonymous. They hide their real identity and location by using fake names and fake postal addresses as well as communicating via anonymous free email accounts and mobile phones.

Keep in mind that scammers DO NOT use their real names when defrauding people.
The criminals either abuse names of real people or companies or invent names or addresses.
Any real people or companies mentioned below have NO CONNECTION to the scammers!

Some comments by the Scam-O-Matic about the following email:

This email uses a separate reply address that is different from the sender address. Spammers use this to get replies even when the original spam sending accounts have been shut down. Also, sometimes the sender addresses are legitimate looking but fake and only the reply address is actually an email account controlled by the scammers.
The following phrases in this message should put you on alert:
- "dear friend" (a common phrase found in 419 scams)
- "top secret" (scammers urge victims to keep the transaction secret because they don't want anyone to point out to them that it is a scam)
- "very confidential" (scammers urge victims to keep the transaction secret because they don't want anyone to point out to them that it is a scam)

Dear Friend,

I will like to solicit your help in a business proposition, which is by nature very confidential and a Top Secret. I know that a transaction of this magnitude will make any one worried and apprehensive but I am assuring you not to worry, as all will be well at the end of this endeavor.

I am Mr. Gren Morgan, Client Service Manager of MediCapital Bank Plc, London-England, my partners and I have decided to seek your help in transfer of some amount of money requiring maximum confidence from my bank. A foreigner, late Engr Kenneth Collins, who was a gold merchant and contractor with the Government of South Africa until his demise along side his entire family on 31st of July 2000 in a plane crash, where all the occupants lost their lives, he was a good customer with the MediCapital Bank Plc and had a balance of US$10.2 Million which the bank now expects his next of kin to claim as beneficiary.

Consequently, we had advertised to get his relative to come forward all to no avail. Due to this development our management and the board of directors are making arrangements for the funds to be declared unclaimed funds and paid into the federal government treasury. Usually, funds of this nature end up in the greedy pockets of some uncaring hands without proper utilization.

To avert this negative development my colleagues and I have decided to look for a reputable person to act as the next of kin to late Engr. Kenneth Collins, so that the funds could be processed and released into your account, which is where you come in. We shall make arrangement with a qualified and reliable attorney that will represent you in liaising with my bank for inconvenience of you coming to my country. All legal documents to aid your claim for this fund and to prove your relationship with the deceased will be provided by us. Your help will be appreciated with 30% of the total sum (US$10.2 Million). Please accept my apologies, keep my confidence and disregard this letter if you do not appreciate this proposition I have offered you.
