"419" Scam – Advance Fee / Fake Lottery Scam

The so-called "419" scam is a type of fraud dominated by criminals from Nigeria and other countries in Africa. Victims of the scam are promised a large amount of money, such as a lottery prize, inheritance, money sitting in some bank account, etc.

Victims never receive this non-existent fortune but are tricked into sending their money to the criminals, who remain anonymous. They hide their real identity and location by using fake names and fake postal addresses as well as communicating via anonymous free email accounts and mobile phones.

Keep in mind that scammers DO NOT use their real names when defrauding people.
The criminals either abuse names of real people or companies or invent names or addresses.
Any real people or companies mentioned below have NO CONNECTION to the scammers!

Some comments by the Scam-O-Matic about the following email:

An email address listed inside this email has been used in a known fraud before.
This email uses a separate reply address that is different from the sender address. Spammers use this to get replies even when the original spam sending accounts have been shut down. Also, sometimes the sender addresses are legitimate looking but fake and only the reply address is actually an email account controlled by the scammers.
The following phrases in this message should put you on alert:
- "dear sir/madam" (a standard Nigerian greeting phrase)
- "from the desk of" (a common phrase found in 419 scams)
- "western union" (this will cost you money - be careful with upfront payments to anyone you only know through email, especially if they promise you a lot of money. NEVER send money by Western Union or MoneyGram to people you do not know personally - NO EXCEPTIONS! Instant wire transfer services are not meant to be used with strangers because they offer no protection against fraud. That is precisely why the criminals want you send money that way. )
- "united state dollar" (this email uses bad English)
- "lome togo" (a location commonly mentioned in 419 scams)

Western Union money transfer is completely untraceable and therefore is *not* safe to use with anyone you do not know personally. It is the preferred method of online criminals to collect money from their victims.
This email lists free webmail addresses. Use of such addresses is typical for scams. Lotteries, banks and any but the smallest of companies do not normally use such addresses. Criminals use them to anonymously send and receive email at Internet cafes.

I wish to inform you that after a brief meeting with His Excellencies, the presidents of the West African Sub-region;I was mandated as the newly appointed director to immediately transfer your fund of (SIX MILLION UNITED STATE DOLLAR) that has been in our system for some time now, to you in your country. This fund was given to you by the AU (African Union) and the government of the west african sub-region countries. We have being looking forward to you for some time now in other to inform you on how you can receive your fund. On my assumption to office I am keen on making immediate transfer to all outstanding foreign beneficiaries that are yet to receive their compensations. I want you to know that this fund was approved to those people who have been working with Africa for a very long time now and are yet to receive any money from Africa, this meeting was held in Accra,the capital city of Ghana in west africa,on the 29th of September 2010.

I am in the control room now, And I want you to act urgently in sending to me two or four receivers name, your ID and passport in other for us to know whom we are making transfer to and to avoid scam. So that you can receive your first bit transfer of THREE MILLION U.S today . I want you to send us four names that we will use to send you your funds by western union, because our correspondents are there in LOME TOGO and BENIN waiting for you to send the names so that they can commence on the transfer immediately.
The total fund that you are going to receive from western union is SIXMILLION U.S DOLLAR this amount can not be transfer to you at once that is why you will have to send to us the two to four receivers name's in which we are to make bit by bit transfer of ONE MILLION DOLLAR. To you without any form of delay.

I want you to know that I was sent from South Africa because of this transaction. South Africa is our head office and now I am in charge of Ghana, Togo, Benin and Nigeria, I have been able to make transfer of fund to the names that are in the western union system. And you are one of them, so now is the time for you to receive your fund without any form of
