"419" Scam – Advance Fee / Fake Lottery Scam

The so-called "419" scam is a type of fraud dominated by criminals from Nigeria and other countries in Africa. Victims of the scam are promised a large amount of money, such as a lottery prize, inheritance, money sitting in some bank account, etc.

Victims never receive this non-existent fortune but are tricked into sending their money to the criminals, who remain anonymous. They hide their real identity and location by using fake names and fake postal addresses as well as communicating via anonymous free email accounts and mobile phones.

Keep in mind that scammers DO NOT use their real names when defrauding people.
The criminals either abuse names of real people or companies or invent names or addresses.
Any real people or companies mentioned below have NO CONNECTION to the scammers!

Some comments by the Scam-O-Matic about the following email:

This email uses a separate reply address that is different from the sender address. Spammers use this to get replies even when the original spam sending accounts have been shut down. Also, sometimes the sender addresses are legitimate looking but fake and only the reply address is actually an email account controlled by the scammers.
The following phrases in this message should put you on alert:
- "from the desk of" (a common phrase found in 419 scams)
- "outstanding contractors" (a common phrase found in 419 scams)
- "your payment is being processed" (they want you to be blinded by the prospect of quick money, but the only money that ever changes hands in 419 scams is from you to the criminals)
- "into your nominated bank account" (they want you to be blinded by the prospect of quick money, but the only money that ever changes hands in 419 scams is from you to the criminals)
- "hundred thousand united states dollars" (they want you to be blinded by the prospect of quick money, but the only money that ever changes hands in 419 scams is from you to the criminals)
- "00,000.00" (they want you to be blinded by the prospect of quick money, but the only money that ever changes hands in 419 scams is from you to the criminals)
- "is 100% risk free" (almost true for the criminal trying to scam you - arrests of online criminals are rare)
- "charles soludo" (the name of a person or institution often appearing in 419 scams)
- "executive governor" (the name of a person or institution often appearing in 419 scams)
- "central bank of nigeria" (the name of a person or institution often appearing in 419 scams)
- "certified bank draft" (Beware of any scheme that involves cashing checks or money orders and then wiring a portion of the funds somewhere - you'll be liable for the entire amount if the checks or money orders turn out to be fake, even after you have received and forwarded cash. If it's a lottery prize, remember that real lotteries do not pay large prizes by check. They wire the money directly to your bank account and you do not pay for that. Many scammers promise a large check only in order to then demand payment of courier fees for a fake courier service. )

This email lists mobile phone numbers. Use of such numbers is typical for scams because they allow criminals to conceal their true location. They can receive calls in an Internet cafe from where they send you emails, while pretending to be in some office.

ATTENTION: OUR HONORABLE CONTRACTOR,

Your funds has been approved and also I want you to know that this time, this a new millennium which I want you to try as much as possible to get back to me immediately so we can proceed, please note that your funds is ready to get to you, and also the investigation team is aware of this transaction and this 100% risk free.

I want to inform you that i am the new sworn President of Central bank of Nigeria, therefore i want you to know that Prof Charles Soludo is no longer in this bank, so i will advise you just stop every conversation you have with him, and just know is you have any deal with, and also just know that from today onward I will be the CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA governor you need to communicate with. And also I want you to confirm back to me if you were the person who sent some men to my office to claim your funds on your behalf?

And make sure any email you get from CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA THAT DOESN'T HAVE THE CODE DONT RESPOND TO THAT.

You will be also advised to take note of this code word i am giving you now,
which will be GOD IS GOOD, in any of my email you didn't get the code word
GOD IS GOOD there I will advise you never to reply to the email and you will know that is is
nothing but HOAX, If you want me to give you more information on this I will advise you call me for more information, i don't want you to get to the hand of the wrong people, make sure you don't make mistake and do as i have instructed you to do, Note every conversation you get from the former CBN governor is nothing but a HOAX, or trying to scam you.

We were also told yesterday by Mr. Corey Johnson that you were dead and no longer exist, he was trying to claim your funds, in which i would like to hear from you if truly you are dead or alive, we have no time to waste at all. Make sure this transaction is confidential so that there wont be any hitch in this transaction.

We Apologies, for the delay of your payment and all the Inconveniences and Inflict that we might have indulge you through. However, we were having some minor problems with our payment system, which is Inexplicable, and have held us stranded and Indolent, not having the aspiration to devote our 100% Assiduity in accrediting foreign contract Payments.

We Apologies once again, From the Records of out standing contractors due for payment with the federal government of Nigeria, your name and Company was discovered as next on the list of the outstanding Contractors who have not yet received their payments..
