"419" Scam – Advance Fee / Fake Lottery Scam

The so-called "419" scam is a type of fraud dominated by criminals from Nigeria and other countries in Africa. Victims of the scam are promised a large amount of money, such as a lottery prize, inheritance, money sitting in some bank account, etc.

Victims never receive this non-existent fortune but are tricked into sending their money to the criminals, who remain anonymous. They hide their real identity and location by using fake names and fake postal addresses as well as communicating via anonymous free email accounts and mobile phones.

Keep in mind that scammers DO NOT use their real names when defrauding people.
The criminals either abuse names of real people or companies or invent names or addresses.
Any real people or companies mentioned below have NO CONNECTION to the scammers!

Some comments by the Scam-O-Matic about the following email:

This email uses a separate reply address that is different from the sender address. Spammers use this to get replies even when the original spam sending accounts have been shut down. Also, sometimes the sender addresses are legitimate looking but fake and only the reply address is actually an email account controlled by the scammers.
The following phrases in this message should put you on alert:
- "western union" (this will cost you money - be careful with upfront payments to anyone you only know through email, especially if they promise you a lot of money. NEVER send money by Western Union or MoneyGram to people you do not know personally - NO EXCEPTIONS! Instant wire transfer services are not meant to be used with strangers because they offer no protection against fraud. That is precisely why the criminals want you send money that way. )
- "mtcn" (this will cost you money - be careful with upfront payments to anyone you only know through email, especially if they promise you a lot of money. NEVER send money by Western Union or MoneyGram to people you do not know personally - NO EXCEPTIONS! Instant wire transfer services are not meant to be used with strangers because they offer no protection against fraud. That is precisely why the criminals want you send money that way. )
- "money transfer control number" (this will cost you money - be careful with upfront payments to anyone you only know through email, especially if they promise you a lot of money. NEVER send money by Western Union or MoneyGram to people you do not know personally - NO EXCEPTIONS! Instant wire transfer services are not meant to be used with strangers because they offer no protection against fraud. That is precisely why the criminals want you send money that way. )
- "lagos" (a location commonly mentioned in 419 scams)

Western Union money transfer is completely untraceable and therefore is *not* safe to use with anyone you do not know personally. It is the preferred method of online criminals to collect money from their victims.
This email lists mobile phone numbers. Use of such numbers is typical for scams because they allow criminals to conceal their true location. They can receive calls in an Internet cafe from where they send you emails, while pretending to be in some office.

Your fear of un-known and not feeling safe is a decisive factor and it is seriously militating against your thought right now, but I want you to know that it is money that will be used to solve this entire problem and your ATM CARD is being delayed due to little finance.

One thing that is clear about me is that I am always honest as I can’t take because of the pressure on me and start telling you lie. What I told you is nothing but the truth, the amount that I told you is just the amount that is needed, I can't lie, even in the worst condition, we should continue to say the truth because it is only the truth that can set us free as it is written in Jn chapt 8. VS 32. It is bitter to hear but truth is life and light. You might call me name, hate me, and think all sorts of things against me; all I know is that the God Almighty father that I worship and serve will vindicate me at last.

Probably the amount is very big to you as you cannot afford it; I want you to know that it's not my making and I am only following the policy and to make sure you get your ATM card.

So I can see that you are overwhelmed. And the situation with you was no help. And was a distraction for you because you didn't want to contribute too financially to resolve this matter. But I can assure you that as soon as you are able to send down the fee you will get your ATM card without anymore delay.

Please you don’t need to be upset with me you will surly get your ATM card this time around. So it hurt you a lot. And to hear someone asking for more money put you over the top. That’s pretty much it. I am sorry that you got upset but put your self in my shoes. Please don’t allow this entire burden to becloud you good sense of judgments

When you know quite well that this entire fee was utilized for this transaction God is my witness about what I am telling you. I can’t deceive you. If I should do that, it then means that I am not serving the living Lord. You shouldn’t be demoralized as there is nothing wrong about your ATM CARD. It is real and you will get it.
