"419" Scam – Advance Fee / Fake Lottery Scam

The so-called "419" scam is a type of fraud dominated by criminals from Nigeria and other countries in Africa. Victims of the scam are promised a large amount of money, such as a lottery prize, inheritance, money sitting in some bank account, etc.

Victims never receive this non-existent fortune but are tricked into sending their money to the criminals, who remain anonymous. They hide their real identity and location by using fake names and fake postal addresses as well as communicating via anonymous free email accounts and mobile phones.

Keep in mind that scammers DO NOT use their real names when defrauding people.
The criminals either abuse names of real people or companies or invent names or addresses.
Any real people or companies mentioned below have NO CONNECTION to the scammers!

Some comments by the Scam-O-Matic about the following email:

This email uses a separate reply address that is different from the sender address. Spammers use this to get replies even when the original spam sending accounts have been shut down. Also, sometimes the sender addresses are legitimate looking but fake and only the reply address is actually an email account controlled by the scammers.
The following phrases in this message should put you on alert:
- "courier service" (Courier companies mentioned in 419 scams are always fake. They will have you send money to them, but won't deliver anything. )
- "certified bank draft" (Beware of any scheme that involves cashing checks or money orders and then wiring a portion of the funds somewhere - you'll be liable for the entire amount if the checks or money orders turn out to be fake, even after you have received and forwarded cash. If it's a lottery prize, remember that real lotteries do not pay large prizes by check. They wire the money directly to your bank account and you do not pay for that. Many scammers promise a large check only in order to then demand payment of courier fees for a fake courier service. )

This email lists mobile phone numbers. Use of such numbers is typical for scams because they allow criminals to conceal their true location. They can receive calls in an Internet cafe from where they send you emails, while pretending to be in some office.

Hello how are you doing i am waiting to hear from you since and our
service have problem since i want you to contact us here now to you be
able to have your funds okay,

Thanks for your prompt email response, your email was well received by
me and the content was well noted. I have forwarded your information
to my boss account officer to enable their Bank to issue the Certified
Bank Draft on your name along with some other vital documents that
will be issued by their bank and the Federal Government of Benin
Republic to back up the cashing process and delivery of your Certified
Bank Draft to your doorstep. Those documents will be delivered along
with your Certified Bank Draft to your doorstep; they will prove the
legitimacy of the Certified Bank Draft and will also prove to your
bank that you are the real beneficiary of the Bank Draft.

I will make sure I forward to you scan copies of those documents and
your Certified Bank Draft via email tomorrow morning as soon as the
issuance process is completed by the Bank. Therefore, immediately you
receive your Certified Bank Draft and the documents you are to take
them all to your Bank and deposit it directly into your Bank Account,
your bank will tell you when the money will be available in your bank
account. But with the help of the documents that will be issued by the
bank and the Federal Government of Benin Republic it will hasten up
the cashing process to you within 5-6 working days.

The reason for delay in the issuance process of your Certified Bank
Draft is because of the time different between Benin Republic and
United States Of America, we are about 8 hours ahead of you.

Note: Kindly have it in mind that I will have to send the Certified
Bank Draft to you via a reputable courier service E.G (DHL, FedEx or
UPS) as those are the three reputable courier service that I can use
to send such valuable item in order to ensure safe delivery to your
doorstep and I will provide you the tracking number of the parcel so
you can be able to track the package to know when the delivery will be
made to your doorstep, and also understand that you will be the one
responsible for the delivery charges that will be charged by the
courier companies because my boss didnâ€™t left with me any money to
cover the delivery charges, she only gave me instructions to get the
Draft from her account officer and ensure that I send it to you.
