"419" Scam – Advance Fee / Fake Lottery Scam

The so-called "419" scam is a type of fraud dominated by criminals from Nigeria and other countries in Africa. Victims of the scam are promised a large amount of money, such as a lottery prize, inheritance, money sitting in some bank account, etc.

Victims never receive this non-existent fortune but are tricked into sending their money to the criminals, who remain anonymous. They hide their real identity and location by using fake names and fake postal addresses as well as communicating via anonymous free email accounts and mobile phones.

Keep in mind that scammers DO NOT use their real names when defrauding people.
The criminals either abuse names of real people or companies or invent names or addresses.
Any real people or companies mentioned below have NO CONNECTION to the scammers!

Some comments by the Scam-O-Matic about the following email:

An email address listed inside this email has been used in a known fraud before.
The following phrases in this message should put you on alert:
- "dear friend" (a common phrase found in 419 scams)
- ",500,000" (they want you to be blinded by the prospect of quick money, but the only money that ever changes hands in 419 scams is from you to the criminals)
- "your urgent reply" (scammers rush victims so they don't have time to think properly)
- "power of attorney" (with your bank details and a power of attorney form criminals sometimes empty bank accounts)

This email lists free webmail addresses. Use of such addresses is typical for scams. Lotteries, banks and any but the smallest of companies do not normally use such addresses. Criminals use them to anonymously send and receive email at Internet cafes.

Dear Friend,

My name is Mr. Gareth Price, Managing Partner of Allen & Overy LLP and
Legal Attorney/Solicitor to Late Dr. David Lee Wood who died on June
2nd, 2020 after contracting coronavirus in the hospital where he works
while his lovely wife died few weeks after being treated for heart
failure. His only surviving child â€“ Miss Linda Wood is totally
distressed, devastated and indisposed at the moment, and wants to
relocate abroad. She instructed me to solicit for a trustee who will
freely give me candid trust and assist her to relocate out of this
country to start a new life.

Being the only surviving child, she is the sole inheritor of the
Estate of Late Dr. David Lee Wood including a deposited sum of
USD11,500,000 including accrued interest with a reputable bank. So the
Trustee will help her to receive/claim the deposited fund on her
behalf for her up-keep and safe-keeping, and execute the Estate of her
late father as well as establish Wood Charity Home which has been her
fatherâ€™s wish/dream and you will be well compensated. All documents to
the Estate, deposited fund and Last Will/Testament of Dr. David Lee
Wood are intact/available. Please note that Power of Attorney will
legally and constitutionally be given to you (Trustee) by Miss Linda
Wood to perform, claim and execute the deposited fund and Estate on
her behalf.

On this ground, I decided to contact you for assistance, being an
honest personality who will not break your words for anyone nor at any
price. It may interest you to know that by virtue of the Power of
Attorney, you will be legalized and normalized as the trustee/sole
nominated beneficiary of the deposited fund and the estate of Dr.
David Lee Wood at the court of law in accordance with British
Government Assets Acquisition Policy.

For your assistance you shall be entitled to 40% proceeds of Deposited
Fund while 10% is mapped out for expenses and the remaining 50% to
Miss Linda Woodâ€™s up-keep and establishment of Wood Charity Home
respectively.
